The stress of exploring the different insurance options available to you and your family may in fact be pushing you to despair. After all you know that your family needs health insurance, that it deserves to have to best possible care, but yet you seem desperate to find an insurance policy that you can afford the premiums on. The following is a guideline of how to go about exploring your insurance options and finding what options are available to you. Although, this is not a guaranteed way to find an affordable option, by going through these steps if there is a more affordable option for you, you will most definitely uncover it.
- Start by looking at what government health care programs are available to you. If you have even a borderline income then there may be some options available to you to cover even just part of your family. Contact your local Medicaid office for further information on programs in your area.
- Decide what you really need. Look at the whole picture. Can you get your children covered by Medicaid or a subsidiary? Can you get free health insurance for just yourself though your job? Can your spouse obtain health insurance through their employer just for themselves? Don’t always assume that having the whole family covered under the same plan will be most cost effective. Many times by looking at places that each individual can get their health insurance from you will find that there are many affordable options all around you, just not as a whole.
- Consider civic groups and community organizations you belong to. Do any of them offer a group discount rate on health insurance? Many times we think only of our jobs for health insurance, but a group only needs to be three or more people, so if you can’t find a group insurance rate for yourself, do you know a group of people that can pool together to form a group for insurance purposes? As long as none of them have significant health problems this can be a very cost effective way to go.
- Figure out your monthly budget realistically and see how much you can afford to set aside for health insurance premiums while still maintaining a slight savings. Doing this will give you a realistic perspective on how much you can afford to pay.
- Take this figure and go online, looking for insurance that covers just those in your family that still need it. Start by checking with any insurance company that you are already dealing with and use rate comparison sites on the web to get a quick overview of what is available to you. You may need to choose higher deductibles or opt for catastrophic insurance if your income is very limited, but remember some insurance is better than none at all.
- Once you have compared rates online, you then should ask around to others you know around your community. Find out who they are getting their health insurance from. It never hurts to gain as much information as you can about your options.
